The Sonder Effect is the realization that each random passerby is living a life as complex as your own. Centered on 20.08.2022, my birthday, the project reflects on how one day can hold deeply personal meaning for some and pass unnoticed for others. To capture this idea, I invited 60 participants to rediscover and share a forgotten memory from their phone taken on that date, creating a collective snapshot of unseen moments.
The outcome consists of two publications: a white, left-bound book presenting the images chronologically, and a black, right-bound counterpart that reads in reverse, mirroring the reflective process behind each memory. Both are housed in a yellow clamshell bookcase, inspired by a phone sleeve design, with “bank cards” summarising the project. The colour yellow, chosen by the majority of participants, embodies the warmth and lightness of August, tying the piece together in tone and spirit.
